Corner Children
A little boy was weeping in a corner
His momma cowering against the wall
Her face bruised and bloody
His father standing over her
His hand at ready
The father does not know or care
That he is there
He like so many others,
Is now a Corner Child
She stands there in the corner
Her black hair a bed headed mess
Watching her mom yell at her dad
She does not think they see her
But they do
She has a silent plea
Don't wake up little brother
I do not want you
Becoming a Corner Child too
He sat there in the corner
Wondering why he is left alone.
Mother could not keep herself alive,
even for him.
He is not sure Father even knows he exists.
Forced to live with others like him,
Orphans,
whose parents gave them up,
or were taken away by force.
He like them will remain in their corners.
Wondering why? Every day.
She stared at the stall door, Wondering.
What did I do? I have done nothing.
I didn't pick on anybody.
I never called anyone any names.
I never hit anyone.
So, why? What did I do?
She joins the other Corner Children.
I wrote this in the eigth grade for an assignment. Well, actually i wrote this approximently 200 word poem a month in advance, before i even knew about and got the assignment. So in class I just sat there, thinking of how to present it. When I read it for the class many cried, some laughed.
