Well, someone had to do it! King Sombra before he was corrupted by darkness. Crystallized. With a cutie mark. This is in my scraps for a reason, while it looks great it is simply use of a pony maker and a painstakingly made blend of several other works by other artists 
Don't get me wrong, putting it all together wasn't easy but the true artists of this are credited via links to their works at the end of the description. Yeah, this is the result of a night where I had nothing but time since I couldn't sleep

History of King Samba: Emperor Samba was a kind and gentle ruler in the early days of his ruling. Under his rule the Crystal Empire was vast and spread further than it had been in the time of his father before him, his mother before him, her mother before her and so on. He spent much of his youth dodging his nursemaid, nanny and teacher: Agatha. She taught him everything she knew from magic to politics to music. The cause of trouble in the capital city along with his friends Sugar Glass, Night Knight, Check Mate, Long Jump and Rapid Rush, he was never a 'learn by the book' type of stallion, preferring to learn by doing rather than reading, much to Agatha's annoyance at her young pupil and charge. None the less he shared a close bond with Agatha and excelled in the magic of both Unicorns and Earth ponies.
As he grew from colt to stallion he learned to understand the love and light that radiated from his ponies, loving the Crystal Faire for what it was. This was further set into stone, or crystal rather, when he earned his cutie mark. Agatha conspired with his parents Emperor Lucent and his unicorn wife, Empress Prophetica, for him to display his skill at playing the anthem of the empire on the flugelhorn, much to the young prince's ire. However, upon seeing the joy and light the performance brought to his people he began to appreciate his talent and earned his cutie mark before the entire capital. Since that Crystal Faire, no pony plays the flugelhorn until their beloved prince, eventually emperor, struck up the anthem from the balcony.
Eventually, his parents' time passed and they stepped down and gave their son the empire to rule over, spending their retirement urging him to find a young mare to marry. Eventually he gave in and married a foalhood friend, much to their surprise but joy, Princess Luna of Equestria rather than a mare of the Crystal Empire. Though he and Luna spent much of their time apart, with Luna's duties to raise and lower the moon and to Equestria, their love was strong and the two of them often ducked out of the Grand Galloping Gala by feigning illness or Luna claiming that she wanted the night sky to be absolutely perfect for the Gala and Samba spent the night critiquing her work.
Shortly after his marriage to Luna, he and five other stallions from all walks of life wound up being forced together to defend the continent from a great evil, the same evil that would later posses Emperor Samba and turn him into King Sombra. Through many trials that proceeded to bombard them over a span of several months, they earned their crests of Bravery, Trust, Wisdom, Humility, Chivalry and Sacrifice. Samba was the last to earn his, when he sacrificed himself to host the darkness to save them all. He studied the darkness and what magic relating to it he could so he that he may better understand it and know how to fight it. While for a time he was able to fight the darkness with the aid of his wife's love and the spirit of the Crystal Empire's ponies, the darkness thrived on his fear that he would one day be unable to control it and for his ever growing worry for Luna, being one of the Elements of Harmony, that of Kindness and eventually housing the elements of Generosity and Honesty after the demise of the original holders. Eventually, he shattered and became Emperor Sombra.
The darkness overtook him more and more with each passing day. His old friends Sugar Glass, Night Knight, Check Mate, Long Jump, Rapid Rush, the Elements of Camaraderie, Harmony, Spirit, and Stature did their best to bring back their beloved friend without the means of force but to no avail. With the Elements of Camaraderie useless without Samba's Element of Sacrifice, and the the Elements of Spirit and Stature being forced to other lands to uphold peace, it was left to the final two bearers of Harmony to stop Emperor Sombra's reign or fear and darkness.
Celestia and Luna had attacked with every intention to destroy Sombra. Upon seeing the Crystal Empire had been reduced to a single city Celestia jeered that the once mighty empire had been brought down to barely a kingdom in just under a year's time and that Sombra was no emperor but a scarcely a king. During their battle King Sombra's cloak moved just enough to reveal a blank flank, his cutie mark having disappeared when he had forgotten the love and light he had once been able to spread with just a few notes of his crystal flugelhron. However, upon their final assault against King Sombra Luna hesitated, unable to kill the stallion she once loved, over powering Celestia's intent to annihilate him and simply banishing him to an icy prison in hopes one day she could transform Sombra back into the pony she had wed.
At some point in their fight a whips of darkness had latched onto Luna and fed off her despair of losing Samba and eventually her own insecurities of the ponies of Equestria not appreciating her night. For a time she did not realize what had rooted its way into her heart. Upon becoming aware of what she was becoming she estranged herself from her foal, a unicorn filly who had hardly been born at the time of Sombra's banishment, so as not to infect her with the darkness. Samba nor Sombra never knew of the filly that had been conceived on the night of the usual Gala ditching. From the line of Princess Opal Moon's six colts and fillies would come many prominent ponies, including Twilight Sparkle, Shinning Armor and the royal pain Prince Blueblood.
